Call for Papers: Southwestern Literature
The Southwest/Texas Popular and American Culture Association invites papers on Southwestern Literature for its 31st annual conference to be held February 10-13, 2010, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Southwestern Literature is an admittedly broad topic. For the purposes of this conference we rely on J. Frank Dobie’s 1934 definition: “Arizona, New Mexico, most of Texas, some of Oklahoma, and anything else north, south, east, or west that anybody wants to bring in.”
Papers in past sessions have ranged widely: race riots; a survey of river literature; Honky Tonk dancing; the effects of the JFK assassination on Texas writers. Papers on specific writers are also welcome. Past papers have covered writers ranging from Ralph Ellison and Katherine Anne Porter to Leslie Marmon Silko and Willa Cather. In short, we welcome any paper, broad or narrow, that contributes to our understanding of the Southwest through its literature.
Please send a 100-word abstract by December 15, 2009, to the Area Chair:
